30 min Sri Lankan Beef Fry

Serving Size:
4 servings
Time:
30 mins
Difficulty:
Easy

Ingredients

  • 300–400g beef (thinly sliced or small cubes, stir-fry or steak cut)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp turmeric
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp coconut oil
  • 1 red onion, sliced
  • 2 green chilies, sliced (adjust to heat level)
  • 1 small bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 sprig curry leaves
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp ginger, minced
  • 2 tbsp tomato sauce (ketchup works!)
  • 1 tbsp sweet & sour sauce
  • 1 tsp soy sauce
  • 1 tsp vinegar or lime juice
  • Splash of water, if needed

Directions

  1. Toss sliced beef with salt, pepper, turmeric, and chili powder.
  2. In a pan with 1 tbsp oil over high heat, sear the beef until browned and just cooked (about 5–7 minutes). Remove and set aside.
  3. In the same pan, add another tbsp of oil. SautΓ© onions, green chilies, bell pepper, curry leaves, garlic, and ginger until slightly charred but still crisp (around 3–4 minutes).
  4. Mix all the sauce ingredients (tomato sauce, sweet & sour sauce, soy sauce, and vinegar) in a bowl and pour into the pan. Let it simmer for 1–2 minutes until thick and glossy.
  5. Add the cooked beef back into the pan. Toss everything to coat well in the sauce. Stir-fry on high heat for 2–3 minutes until sticky and sizzling.
  6. Add more chili or a splash of water if you want it saucier. Finish with a squeeze of lime for that signature Lankan kick.
