30 min Sri Lankan Beef Fry
Ingredients
- 300–400g beef (thinly sliced or small cubes, stir-fry or steak cut)
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp black pepper
- 1 tsp turmeric
- 1 tsp chili powder
- 1 tsp coconut oil
- 1 red onion, sliced
- 2 green chilies, sliced (adjust to heat level)
- 1 small bell pepper, chopped
- 1 sprig curry leaves
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tsp ginger, minced
- 2 tbsp tomato sauce (ketchup works!)
- 1 tbsp sweet & sour sauce
- 1 tsp soy sauce
- 1 tsp vinegar or lime juice
- Splash of water, if needed
Directions
- Toss sliced beef with salt, pepper, turmeric, and chili powder.
- In a pan with 1 tbsp oil over high heat, sear the beef until browned and just cooked (about 5–7 minutes). Remove and set aside.
- In the same pan, add another tbsp of oil. Sauté onions, green chilies, bell pepper, curry leaves, garlic, and ginger until slightly charred but still crisp (around 3–4 minutes).
- Mix all the sauce ingredients (tomato sauce, sweet & sour sauce, soy sauce, and vinegar) in a bowl and pour into the pan. Let it simmer for 1–2 minutes until thick and glossy.
- Add the cooked beef back into the pan. Toss everything to coat well in the sauce. Stir-fry on high heat for 2–3 minutes until sticky and sizzling.
- Add more chili or a splash of water if you want it saucier. Finish with a squeeze of lime for that signature Lankan kick.
